.
lives by the owner must regularly inspect and measure tle
accumulation of sludge in ile tank. 'I'liis must be done at least once
 every duee years.
Sludge, or septage, includes the settled materials at the bottom of the
tank, the floating scum matcrials at tte top of ttie taiik and the liquid in
the tank at the time of cleaning. The septic tank should be cleaned
whenever the tup of the sludge layer is cluser lhan 12 incles to the
bottotn of tle outlet baftle or whenever de bottom of the scum
layer is closer than 3 inches to the bottom of the outlet baine. Both
conditions likely will not oc;cur at the same time in a septic tailc, but
either condition requires tank cleaing.

 PENCIL
i— , MARKS
  ;.
o-. ,'.,.;
6 , . ir, ' ''.

.:a
 " Y. Y : 1 .
. 2 OLE oi jm
 MANH
 ' i' i' l
•, . Push the measuring
device through the scum layer into tle liquid layer. If the stick is
carefully moved down and up, resistance on the"foot"should locate
the bottom of the scum layer. Equipment is also commercially avail-
able to measure scum and sludge accumulations.
Mark the stick at a conveiiient reference point when you feel the
bottom of tlie scum layer. .With the same stick, locate the bottorn of
the oudet baffle. Determine the distance between the bottom of the
scum layer and the bottom of the outlet baffle by measuring the dis-
_ tance between the mazks on the stick.
