1 . J
. C-16
The effluent filter also requires regular maintenance and must be
periodically checked. As a concern for the homeownef s safety in
dealing with the components of a septic system, most
manufacturers and regulatory agencies recommend that a
certified inspector or septic tank pumper provide this
maintenance. The filter must periodically be removed from the
tank, and the solids, which have been trapped and attached to
the filter, must be washed back into the septic tank. This is why it
would be more appropriate to have this done during the time
your septic tank is being pumped. This perhaps isthe one
disadvantage of having an effluent filter. If the filter is not
maintained, it will potentially clog and create problems for the
onsite wastewater treatment system. Such an example could be
plugging the septic tank, causing the sewage to back up into the
home.
Holding Tanks
While holding tanks are not recommended for installation on
newly developed lots, there are some developed lots which do
not have adequate area for a sewage treatment system. In some
insces, a holding tank may be the only alternative.
Figure C-16i shows a schematic diagram of a holding tank,
together with the tank capacity as recommended by Chapter
.
4"pipe for
access to inlet 6'cleanout pipe
finished grade with tight cap
house sewer :_- • at least 6" soil cover
• ',
, < i:;
=,  ,.; :#.   :. ...b•.';_  . .:+:
" 7'...;.nc '_r f.o,h - 20 min 7''''ai 'rya s"s r.'::rv'•a
4ji..
{4`
4 Tank capacity for residences: 1,000 gallons minimum, n`:
' or 400 gallons per bedroom,whichever is greatest;for i.:
 a, other establishments:five times the average design ' -
";' flow.
 y'
F. f7<:}
'' Tank must be watertight. •' '
a:
:: i,-
;: Water flowing into sewage system must be monitored. `x;
; For other establishments,a positive warning system `:
; must be installed which allows 25% reserve capacity .
'=' after activation. z`':
-. ,L
q,l T< :ri icilt; O:Y` 1'" u:7 ';Yc4,ra' : :c y . . :...
<<•µ• r i!,1+a 3;1, r` i ." ." -',,.•';Y;
Figure C-12: Holding Tank Specs
