August 8, 2011
City of Orono
2750 Kelley Parkway
Orono, MN 55356
Attn: City Administrator
Dear Ms. Loftus:
We are writing to you in regards to our property at 3025 6'Ave. N.; we were issued a letter from the
City of Orono concerning the material/debris that is in violation of the city codes. In speaking with
Christine Mattson she suggested we write you a letter explaining our situation.
The first letter we received was dated April 27, 2011, stating our violations and our need to clean up by
May 11, 2011. An inspector came and re-inspected, per the letter written on May 17, 2011 noticed a
dumpser on or propes#y#hs exterd3 our date#itl May 23, 209. 1 perscnalyt to the Gitr esf
Orono and spoke with Christine Mattson explaining our situation; and we have been in contact either by
phone or by email. She has been very helpful and we appreciate her direction and patience in this
process.
We have desired to expand and improve our property by adding on a detached garage and a paver
driveway. This was put on ho(d wNen the new Jamestown Rc1. sanitary sewer system was instafled. A
letter dated November 19, 2007 stating that no expansion on the property was permitted until hookup to
the new systm ws completed, This1ded expense mde any addi#ion difficult to attain. 7he current
economic downtum added to the inabitity to move forward with plans.
The business my husband operates was forced to downsize this past fall due to less demand, smaller
contracts and delinquent accounts. Closing his Medina shop resulted in a surplus inventory and no
storage. This in part is what is methodically being eliminated, moved off site or still being stored until it
can bedclressed.
The decision to wait on the sewer system has been one of frustration. Materials on the property would
be eliminated by building a detached garage and paver driveway. Our cuRent single car garage,
attached io our home,is o#no use, struturally ureak ands primarily used#or storage suppGes that
came from our former shop. We have estimated that the cost to build the garage and driveway would
only be around $3-4,000 (mainly for excavation). The materials for the building have already been
purchased but pfians have not been sutmitted. 'This is due in part by wanting to supply an overafii site
plan to the city.
