Dahlmeier
Engineering Inc. on May 3, 2000 to review existing conditions.
2. The layout and plan areas are shown on the conceptual layout for the
Narrows Saloon.
3. Construction consists of exterior 12" concrete masonry load bearing walls and
12" concrete masonry foundation with store front windows. The roof system
is wood decking on wood joists spanning east and west supported on beams
and/or walls at 20 foot centers with built-up roofing.
4. An 8" concrete masonry wall exists 40 feet from the east wall. The owner
wishes to remove this entire wall and replace it with a steel beam column
system.
5. The structural engineering design for the wall replacement is:
a. Shore existing structure as necessary. Protect structure from damage
during construction.
b. Prepare beam pocket at north and south walls. Install two #5 six feet
long from load bearing down into wall. Fill with 2,500 psi grout.
Expand grout fill to 2 feet wide top 2 feet of wall.
c. Install bearing plates 7-1/2"x12"x5/8" thick on 1/2" grout pad.
d. Remove wall at chimney. Prepare column bearing at center of
chimney. Install four #5 in 16" width full height to footing. Fill with
2,500 psi grout. Grout solid 48" wide area, 32" deep at top of wall.
Install 3-1/2" round standard weight column or 4"x4"x1/4" square tube
with 7-1/2"x12"x5/8" base plate and standard top plate to accommodate
beam.
 e. Prepare and in5iail tcvo beam5 L'16x31 (ASTM A36j, one spanning
from rear to column behind chimney and second from column to front.
Weld or bolt to bearing plates and column top plate. Install alignment
plate 1/4"x4"x10" on both sides of web near top of beam at column.
Weld one end each side only.
f. Install 2"x6" wood plate on top of steel beam bolted @ 36" O.C.
g. Nail esting roof joist to plate after alignment with four lOd toe nails
each joist to plate.
h. Repair any damaged items.
6. The foundation system has been reviewed and is structurally adequate to
support these new concentrated loads based on load replacement and load
redistribution.
