INI'RODUC170N
Thi report is a pnesentation of resulis nf a surface flammabilifiy best on a mat+erial submit#+ed by 3M
Commercial Graphics,St.Paul,Minnesota.
The test was conducbed in accordance with the AS'I'M lnbematioaal fire-test response standard E84-13a,
Srtrface Burning Chm,acteristics of 8uilding Malerials, sometimes refernd to as the Sbeiner tunnel best.tSTM
E84 iu an American National Standard (ANSn and has been approved for by agencies of the
Department of Defense. The ASTM 884 test method is the teehnical equivalent of UI.No.723.The best is
applicable bo exposed interior aurfaces such as walls and oeilings. The test is conducted with tie specimen
, in the ceiling posifion with the surface to be evaluaied face down bward the igniiion source. Thus,
speeimens shall eikher be self-supporting by its own struchiral quality, held in place by added supports
alcg the test surface,or secured from the back side.
This standard is used to measure and dcribe the response of materiais, products, or assembliea to heat
and Rame under oontrolled conditions, but dces not by itsdf incorporate all factors required for fire-
hazard or fire-risk assessment ofe matrials, products,or assemblies under achal frre wnditions.
Pusros
The purpe of the teis to provide only the comparative measurements of surface flame spread and
smoke develcpmet uf materials with that of select grade red oak and 8berreinforced cement board,
Grade lI,under specific fire exposure conditiona. The test expoes a nomina124foot long by 20-iach wide
best apecimen to a controlled air flow and flaming fire adjusbed to spread the IIame along the entire lengdl
of a red oak specimen in 5minutees.During tfie 10-mirnite test duration, flamp read over the eamen
surEace and density of t!u resulting smoke aze measured and remrded.Test resulta are celcularelative
to red nak,which has an arbitrary rahing of00,and fiber-reinforced cement bord,Grade II,which has a
ratig vf 0.
The test resulis are expressed as Ftame Spread Index and Smoke Developed Index. The Flame Spresd
index is de6ned in AS7'M S 176 as"a number ar dassi6cation indicating a comparative measure derived
fi► observations made during the progress of the boundary of a zone af flame under deined test
cvditicros." The Smoke Developed Index, a term speafic fio ASTM E84, is def{ned as "a number or
classi8cafion indieating a comparative measure derived from smoke obseuraton data colleced during
the Mat for surface burning characberistics." There is not necEssarily a relationship between the twu
measurements.
The method does not provide for measurement oF heat transmission through the surface tested, the effect
of aggravabed iteme spread behevior of an assembly resulting from the proximity vf combustibl valls
and ailngs,or classifying a maberial as noncombustible solely by means of a Flame Sgread Index.
The zero reference and other parameters critical to furnace operation are veri6ed an the day of de best by
canducting a 1Q-minute test using 1/4-incfi fiber-reinforced cement board,Grade II. Periadic tests using
NOFMA cerdfied 23/32-inch seleet grade red oak FIooring provide daha for the 700 reference.
TEST SA1N!'LE
The test sample, selected by the dlen, was identified as 3M'Envisioa'*' Print Wrap Film 480Cb3, a
self-adhring fi1m (Lot #H13048) with a tofial thiektess of U.004". Three best panels, each measuring two
fieet wide by dght feet in length, were prepared by adhecing the material to S/S-inch thick Type X
gypsufn baard complying witASTMSpecflcation C 1396.The sampie waapplied M the smoott side of
the gypsum wallboard using the self-adheriaB Pr'P'ties of khe sarnple, actd smoothed with a brush and
roller. This method oF sample preparation is describ in ASTM E2.404-13e1, Sbndard Prac6ce for
5ycinen Pfeprrration and Maenting af Ttxtle,Paper or Palymeric flrchding Vinyl) Wa1I aCeiling Cvverings.
and of Farings and Wood Veretrs Intende ta be Arlied oa Site Oer a 4Vood Substrate, M Assess 5urfiace
Burning Chmrchristics, Section $.3, Wall or Ceiling Coverings Inbended to be Applied over Gypsum
Board. After dead-stacking ovemigh#, the mpared panels were transferred to storage racks and
mndi6oned to equilibrium in an aimosphere witthe temperatur+e maintained at 7'1 t Z°F and the relative
Pae 2 of{
