Because the LVLs were bowed at installation,
Gary's framing crew bolted the three LVL's together to straighten them out, using 5/8" bolts and washers. The
bolts have now been removed to allow for drywall installation. The framing crew has installed GRK rugged
structural screws in place of the bolts, set flush with the face of the beam. The inspector wonders if the bolt
holes have compromised the beam. Gary is willing to drive%" steel rod into the bolt holes, if necessary.
• In order to install a drain line to the kitchen sink, Gary drilled a 2%' diameter hole through the center of the 6x6
post, located to the east of the kitchen windows. Again, the inspector wonders if the 6x6 post has been
compromised.
I am attaching a redlined structural plan (53.0) showing the location of the two issues, and photos depicting the current
conditions at Beam 1 and at the 6x6 post.
We would like your feedback and recommendations regarding the two issues and if any remediation is required. If you
would like to talk to Gary directly, he can be reached at 612-210-2286.
Thanks for your help,
Laurel
Laurel Ulland Architecture
 A
www.laurelultand.com
1718 Logan Ave South
Minneapolis, MN 55403
612 377 5984 m
Laurel Ulland
laurel@laurelulland.com e
From: David C.Johnson [mailto:Dlohnson@vaaeng.com]
Sent: Friday,July 14, 2017 2:44 PM
1
