After staff analysis, it is determined that the sign as constructed is
defined as a pylon sign and does not meet the code requirements in 78-1466. Any ground sign
constructed within the City must meet the definition of monument sign. The pertinent City Code
sections are attached.
As the sign doesn't meet City Code it must be removed by March 17th to avoid legal action by
the City. If you wish to apply for an after-the-fact variance you may do so using the application
form provided the required submittal documents have been highlighted. Please note, an
application for a variance is reviewed by the Planning Commission and City Council. Variances
are typically only granted in cases where an inherent hardship to the property exists.
A completed application must be received by Wednesday, March 17th at noon for
consideration at the April Planning Commission public hearing. A payment of$1,400 is required
for an after-the-fact application.
Please submit a variance request or remove the sign by March 17th in order to avoid legal action
by the City. If you have any questions, please contact me via email at mcurtis ci.orono.mn.us
or at 952.249.4627.
Sincerely,
CITY OF ORONO
Melanie Curtis
Planning & Zoning Coordinator
c: Lyle Oman, Building Official
Enclosures: Variance Application
City Code
Telephone(952)249-4600 • Fax (952)249-4616
www.ci.orono.mn.us
